Description

Dear Community Leaders:

Please join me on Saturday, September 7, 2019, for a second town hall regarding the next 2020 U.S. Census. Our first town hall was aimed at empowering our local leaders with the information necessary to ensure a full and accurate count. The purpose of my second town hall is to inform and empower those who will be most impacted: the entire community, especially our hard-to-count populations.

As a member of the Rules and Appropriations Committees, the discussion and town hall is part of my August recess initiative to address the significance of counting everyone in California's 35th Congressional District. Over 31 percent of the district resides in hard-to-count neighborhoods. During the 2010 U.S. Census, only 74.2 percent of households filled out their mail-in questionnaire, while 25.8 percent did not respond. Several factors contribute to these insufficient response rates, including households with young children, low-income individuals, highly mobile families, those living in non-traditional housing, and a distrust of government. Providing an informational presentation and town hall will allow us the opportunity to ensure our district is receiving the adequate and necessary resources.

Several guest speakers will offer an introduction on what to expect for the 2020 U.S. Census, understanding the challenges around the undercount of children, and learn how the Inland Empire is working to increase access to online questionnaires.

Your input matters to me, and I hope you will be able to join me for this important conversation.
